Profile
My work focuses on the relationship between migration and gender and sexuality from feminist and queer perspectives. I am particularly interested in how norms surrounding sexuality shape the legal, political, and social processes related to migration, as well as how changes in these norms—and resistance to them—are connected to lived experiences. My current research takes the experiences of queer migrants, refugees and asylum seekers as a point of departure, examining related discourses, policies, histories and political dynamics. In addition, I explore how particular genders and sexualities are rendered (in)eligible for “protection” or “rescue” within global sexual politics.
Message to students
My academic background lies in transnational sociology, refugee and forced migration studies and gender and sexuality studies, which together brought me to the field of queer migration studies. To understand the places, spaces and communities in which people live, as well as the roles and dynamics of diverse actors I rely largely on fieldwork as a research method. Students whose research interests relate to these areas are welcome to join my seminar. Together, we engage with the complex and richly layered experiences, perceptions, practices and histories of individuals and communities that cannot be fully contained within state‑centred frameworks and logics. We adopt approaches that question dominant notions and subjects from the margins. In doing so, I hope we can also critically reflect on our own positionalities as researchers and on the often-unequal relationships between researchers and those who become the “subjects” of research.
